Call for consultancy

for the development of a NIS monitoring programme and early warning system
in the port of Valencia

SPA/RAC is issuing a call for consultancy to hire an international expert in Non-indigenous Species (NIS) to develop a monitoring plan for NIS and an early warning system for the Port of Valencia, Spain. Proposals must be submitted electronically before 23 October 2023. For more details, please refer to the Terms of Reference

The IMAP-MPA project’s legacy: three gains for biodiversity conservation

Funded by the European Union, the regional IMAP-MPA project concluded in August 2023 after 48 months of activities aimed at “Achieving the Good Environmental Status of the Mediterranean Sea and Coast through an Ecologically Representative, Efficiently Managed and Monitored Network of Marine Protected Areas”.

A win for the ocean: High Seas Treaty signed at United Nations

The High Seas Treaty, also known as the agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction or ‘BBNJ‘, was signed in New York on 20 September, in the margins of the United Nations High Level Week.

The adoption of this agreement is a historic achievement marking the successful end of more than a decade of multilateral work.

EU Commission adopts measures to restrict intentionally added microplastics

On 25th September the Commission takes another major step to protect the environment by adopting measures that restrict microplastics intentionally added to products under the EU chemical legislation REACH. The new rules will prevent the release to the environment of about half a million tonnes of microplastics.

Scoping Study to develop a Mediterranean pilot on measuring the sustainability of the Mediterranean Blue Economy

This assignment aims at conducting a feasibility study to frame the development of a holistic assessment of the sustainability of the Mediterranean Blue Economy. The assignment is planned to take place between Monday, October 9th, 2023, and Sunday, December 15th, 2023. All documents will be produced in English.

Six takeaways from the 2023 MAP Focal Points meeting in Istanbul
