COP 23: let’s meet in Slovenia

The 23rd Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention COP23, will take place in Portorož, Slovenia, from 5 to 8 December 2023.

The Convention, signed by 14 States and the European Union, entered into force in 1978. Its main objectives include the control of marine pollution, the sustainable management of seas and coasts, the integration of the environment into social and economic development and the protection of the marine environment and coastal areas through the prevention and reduction of pollution.

Towards a Data-Driven Sustainability of the Mediterranean Blue Economy

On November 23 in Marseille, a regional workshop organised by Plan Bleu will focus on the Blue Economy in the Mediterranean.

A Forum for Africa

The 2nd MSPforum for Africa took place from 5 to 6 November 2023 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The event, organised by UNESCO-IOC and co-organised by the African Union, the Secretariat of the Nairobi Convention, the Secretariat of the Abidjan Convention and UNEP/MAP/RAC, aimed to exchange views on the progress made in implementing the blue economy and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in UNEP’s three Regional Seas Programmes.

The System for reporting on the pollutant loads discharged into the Mediterranean

In occasion of “Meeting for developing the preliminary elements for new National Action Plans (NAPs) and sharing Best Practices for application of the Guidelines for estimating pollutants loads from agriculture and aquaculture sectors” held in Athens on 24 -25 October, Francesca Catini by INFO/RAC, the UNEP/MAP Information and Communication Activity Center, presented the National Baseline Budget Reporting System.

Mission COP23!

The new adventure that will see students from the high school “Tasso” in Rome take part in the Transversal Skills and Orientation Pathways (PCTO) of the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), promoted by INFO/RAC at regional level and entitled “A lesson in environmental governance: discovering actions for the Mediterranean Sea and its coasts“, has begun.

All WeMed Award winners

The third edition of the WEMED AWARD was held on 23 October, in the beautiful Beit Al-Hekma, the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts. This annual award promotes the transition to sustainability in the Mediterranean and recognizes the success stories of sustainable businesses and public authorities that support them.

Plan Bleu : 53 new views on the MAPX tool

Plan Bleu announced the publication of 53 new views within the MapX tool. These enable a deeper understanding of the Mediterranean and its socio-economic developments, while also raising awareness of crucial environmental issues that deserve our attention.

Opportunities

Nature-Based Solutions: a new call

Supporting research on biodiversity to gain a better understanding of the tipping points and trade-offs and underlying mechanisms affecting Nature-Based Solutions, and their successful implementation. This is the call promoted by BiodivERsA, the Biodiversity Partnership co-funded by Horizon Europe that supports biodiversity research with impact for policy and society.  The call is for transnational, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research projects in all parts of the world.

New JPI Oceans Joint Call on the ecological aspects of deep-sea mining

Entering into the third phase of the Joint Action, JPI Oceans aims to advance scientific knowledge in support of policy making on deep-sea mining, while facilitating the analysis of related ethical implications and societal consequences. The scope of this call results from a yearlong process in which interested JPI Oceans members invited scientists, policy makers, industry, and NGO representatives to take stock of knowledge gaps and future research priorities.

MedWaves the centre for international cooperation on development and innovation based on the sustainable consumption and production approach, published an advertisement for the search of technical assistance in Bar, Montenegro. 

Marine and Coastal Protected Areas: a Call for a study on the management approaches

SPA/RAC has launched a call for tender to develop a guidance document that will serve as a basis for more effective and sustainable management of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MPAs) in Tunisia.
