Mediterranean Coast Day 2024: Recognizing the Vital Role of Women in Coastal Sustainability

The slogan of Mediterranean Coast Day 2024 is “Inspiring coastal communities to take action for the sustainable development of the Mediterranean”.

Mediterranean Coast Day has become an annual regional festival dedicated to the sustainability and health of the coastal zones. On 25 September and during the week that ensues, several events and activities are organized by MAP Partners and Civil Society Organizations working in the region.

Fisheries Science Seminar on Artificial Intelligence

The annual Fisheries Science Seminar, organised by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will take place on 25 September 2024. This year’s seminar will focus on the potential contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) towards achieving fisheries sustainability. 

UFM REGIONAL PLATFORM ON INDUSTRIAL COOPERATION MEETS TO DISCUSS FUTURE SYNERGIES

The Commission announced 26 new projects that will receive €126.9 million to contribute to the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters.
The 26 new projects count 346 beneficiaries from 37 countries, including SMEs, research institutions, local authorities, higher or secondary education establishments and businesses.

Recommendations to enhance Offshore Wind Energy in the Mediterranean Sea

The 48th Plan Bleu note proposes recommendations for sustainably strengthening the wind energy sector in the Mediterranean. In this note, 16 challenges (environmental, socio-political, economic and financial, legal and regulatory frameworks and technological) are identified as priorities for the Mediterranean basin.

PLAN BLEU’S ACTIVITY REPORT

2023 was a very active year for Plan Bleu. Focal points meeting, the meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development in June in Marseille, finalization of the 2022-2023 work program, the preparation of that relating to the 2024-2025 biennium, COP 23 of the Barcelone Convention in Portoroz in Slovenia, publications on the coast, adaptation to climate change, coastal tourism, environmental easements, offshore wind power, unconventional use of water.

MedWaves is providing its unique methodology for a new pilot program to promote the circular economy and social inclusion with an emphasis on gender equity among support entities for the creation of youth-led businesses in Bolivia.

When the chef is smart: Invasive alien species, from the sea to the table

Although the invasion of these species can cause alarm to a certain extent, it is important to focus on the potential opportunities that can be seized, for instance, through the engagement of chefs with creativity, knowledge and skills to cook sustainable, nutritious and delicious food. That is when the LIFE project “LIFE Climate Smart Chefs” comes to play. A project that received a funding of 961,976 EUR, with beneficiaries from Italy, Finland, and Ireland but involving chefs from all EU27 countries.

 

NEW STUDY | TRENDS AND OUTLOOK OF MARINE POLLUTION

In this report Rempec compiled knowledge about maritime traffic and offshore O&G activities and their impacts on the marine environment, focusing on five main aspects: pollution from oil and chemicals, marine litter, air pollution, non-indigenous species (NIS) and underwater noise.

National workshop on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation

The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in close co-operation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Lebanon Petroleum Administration (LPA), held last August 14 an online Training Course on Oil pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation Level 3 (Strategic). The course is financed by the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).

The online course gathered over 20 participants from various competent authorities in Lebanon, with the aim to provide senior managers and administrators with a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in managing oil spills of national significance.
