First International Ocean Decade Coastal Cities Conference
The First International Conference of Coastal Cities of the Decade of the Ocean will be held in Qingdao, China, in February 2025. The event will be hosted by the Qingdao Municipal People’s Government in collaboration with UNESCO‘s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO).
Following the momentum and results of the Decade of the Ocean 2024 conference, this event will mark a decisive moment for the recently launched “Cities with the Ocean” platform and will be a major step towards the UN Oceans 2025 conference as well as the special pre-conference event on “Ocean Rise and Resilience”.
Catalyzing coastal adaptation finance in Montenegro
This report analyzes Montenegro’s adaptation strategies and needs to address the impacts of climate change in its coastal areas, particularly the Bay of Kotor, one of the two pilot sites of the GEF MedProgramme SCCF Project. REMPEC organized the Regional Workshop on Reporting, Monitoring and Data Sharing (MEDEXPOL 2024), in Lija, Malta from 25 to 26 September 2024, to implement the recommendations of the 15th Meeting of REMPEC Focal Points, pertaining to these topics. The Workshop gathered around 20 participants, from 15 out of 22 Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, as well as representatives from CEDRE and ITOPF. The target audience for the Workshop were the designated members of the Correspondence Groups established within the Mediterranean Technical Working Group (MTWG).
Proposal for an initial series of fishing opportunities for 2025 in the Mediterranean and Black Seas
Lately, the Commission adopted its proposal for fishing opportunities for 2025 for the Mediterranean and the Black Seas that promotes the sustainable management of fish stocks in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas and also delivers on the political commitments made in the MedFish4Ever and Sofia Declarations.


The Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean
The foreign ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean will meet on 28 October 2024 in Barcelona as part of the 9th Regional Forum of the UfM. The purpose of the meeting will be to review progress in the reform of the organisation, launched in 2023, and to discuss the most pressing regional challenges, in particular the alarming situation in the Middle East. The event will also provide an opportunity to exchange views on how to collectively address these issues in the face of regional tensions.
