MedWaves at COP29

The 29th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. Guided by the motto “ When We Act Together, We Grow Together” MedWaves”, the UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Centre for SCP, is set to actively participate in COP29, aligning with the Mediterranean Coalition led by the Union for the Mediterranean and the UNEP/MAP Coordinating Unit.

Day of the Mediterranean

In November 2020, all Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean declared the 28th of November as the official Day of the Mediterranean, to be marked annually, calling upon the entire Mediterranean community and everyone who identifies with the Mediterranean to celebrate the lasting legacy of this age-old agora of cultural dialogue, wisdom and humanism.

Electronic Version of the Oiled Shoreline Assessment Form

The Fifteenth Meeting of REMPEC Focal Points held in Malta in June 2023, requested REMPEC’s Secretariat to develop an electronic version of the Oiled Shoreline Assessment Form.
REMPEC has developed the electronic version of the Form, in collaboration with a consultant and close coordination with members of the correspondence groups under the Mediterranean Technical Working Group (MTWG) as well as members of the Mediterranean Assistance Unit (MAU).

The Form may be accessed through this link for the English Version or for the French Version.

Commission supports maritime spatial planning globally

The proper planning of ocean space and use is a precondition of good ocean governance. It is indispensable if we want to sustainably grow our blue economy and preserve – or even restore – the marine ecosystem.
Since 2017, the Commission, in partnership with IOC-UNESCO, is supporting/funding the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Global initiative to promote better use of maritime space at a global scale. It aims to meet the ambitious goal of covering at least 1/3 of the global maritime areas under national jurisdictions with marine spatial plans by 2030.

In October 2024, at the 6th International Maritime Spatial Planning Forum in Bali, Indonesia, the Commission announced that the MSP Global Initiative would continue with the MSPglobal 3.0 project.

Confronting Complexities: Grounding Global Goals through Regional activities

During the month of October, several regional meetings progressed on identifying both challenges and opportunities related to the chemicals and wastes, from capacity building to securing a safe natural ecosystem and thriving sustainable business ecosystems. MedWaves, as an activity centre supporting transformation through the promotion of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) activities, is in a unique and privileged position to be able to engage with, and respond to, these complex challenges.

Soil – River – Sea: Seeking Solutions with SEACURE

Growing food to sustain lives and livelihoods without causing harmful effects is a challenge, especially in the Mediterranean region. Increased collective awareness of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution demand that business-as-normal behaviours in the agricultural sector shift dramatically. Science tells us that a transition to a low-carbon sustainable pathway is possible, yet the question remains: how? Seeking solutions by observing existing relationships and avoiding the perpetuation of degrading patterns requires adaptation and innovation. SEACURE, an EU-funded programme, steps forward on this pathway, steering behavioural change and implementing restoration through prevention, reduction of nutrient pollutants and remediation solutions.

Innovative Financing for the Ecological Transition

On October 22, Plan Bleu hosted a group of experts to address the urgent environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean, along with the financial solutions and economic tools needed to tackle them. Their insights enriched our ongoing work on the revision of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD 2026–2035).

Revolutionising Precision Fishing Through Digital Transformation

Fishing is changing, and projects like VISTools are leading the way. This innovation harnesses the power of technology to optimise fishing operations by automating data collection and analysis of data on fishing vessels. By equipping vessels with smart sensors that monitor catch composition, location, and fuel consumption, VISTools provides skippers and shipowners with real-time insights into their economic and environmental performance.
